Diagnose before you change settings
“Slow internet” can mean several different things: a web page takes a long time to begin loading, video buffers, calls freeze, or downloads are slow. Those symptoms can come from your device, your Wi-Fi connection, your router, the line to your provider, or the service you are using. Test one layer at a time instead of changing everything at once.

- ISP (internet service provider): the company that connects your home or phone to the internet.
- Router: the device that directs traffic between your home devices and the internet. It often provides Wi-Fi.
- Modem: the device that connects your home network to the ISP’s cable, fiber, or phone line. Some boxes combine modem and router.
- Wi-Fi: a short-range wireless connection between your device and router.
- Ethernet: a wired network connection, usually more stable than Wi-Fi.
- DNS (domain name system): the internet’s address book. It translates a name such as example.com into the numerical address computers use.
- Latency: the delay for a small message to travel and return, often measured in milliseconds. High latency harms calls and games even when downloads seem fast.

Step 1: run a clean comparison test
Pause active downloads, cloud backups, and streaming where possible. Then test at least two devices. Stand near the router for the Wi-Fi test. If you can, connect one computer by Ethernet and run the same speed test.
Write down download speed, upload speed, and latency. Download speed is data arriving to you; upload speed is data leaving your network. Video calls, backups, and file sharing can be limited by upload speed.
If Ethernet is fast but Wi-Fi is slow, your ISP is probably not the first thing to blame. If every device is slow, including Ethernet, the issue is more likely the router, modem, line, or ISP.
Step 2: look for bandwidth users
Bandwidth is the amount of data a connection can carry in a period of time. Think of it as road width, not travel time. A large game update, cloud-photo upload, security-camera backup, or 4K stream can consume much of it.
Check:
- Computer task managers for network-heavy applications.
- Phone photo backup settings.
- Game consoles and smart TVs for updates.
- Other household members' downloads or video calls.
- Unknown devices in the router's connected-device list.
On Windows, Task Manager can help identify active applications. If you find an unknown device, change your Wi-Fi password, use WPA2 or WPA3 security if supported, and update the router administrator password too.
Step 3: separate Wi-Fi from the internet connection
Wi-Fi is convenient but sensitive to distance, walls, other networks, and household electronics. The 2.4 GHz band travels farther but is often crowded and slower. The 5 GHz band is usually faster at shorter range. Newer equipment may offer 6 GHz, which can be less crowded but has shorter range.
Try these fixes in order:
- Move within a few meters of the router.
- Restart the affected device.
- Forget the Wi-Fi network and reconnect using the correct password.
- Try the 5 GHz or 6 GHz network name if your router separates bands.
- Place the router high and in an open central area, away from thick walls and metal cabinets.
- Use Ethernet for fixed devices such as a desktop, console, or television.
Do not hide a router in a cupboard simply because the cables look untidy. Radio signal has to travel through every obstruction.
Step 4: restart in the right order
A restart can clear a temporary fault, but do it methodically. Unplug the modem and router for about 30 seconds. Turn the modem back on first and wait until it reconnects. Then power on the router and wait for Wi-Fi to return. If you have a single combined unit, restart that one device.
Do not repeatedly reset the device to factory settings. A factory reset erases your Wi-Fi name, password, and provider configuration; use it only when your ISP or device documentation tells you to.
Check the router maker’s official support site for firmware, the low-level software that runs the router. Firmware updates can fix stability and security issues. Back up settings if the device offers that option.
Step 5: distinguish DNS trouble from slow bandwidth
If a speed test is normal but websites pause before opening, DNS may be involved. Your device asks a DNS resolver for the address of a site before it can connect. Try another device first. Then restart the router. You may test a reputable resolver, such as Cloudflare 1.1.1.1, following its official instructions, and compare results.
Changing DNS does not increase the maximum speed you pay for. It can only improve name lookups when the current resolver is slow or unreliable. Keep a note of the old setting so you can revert it.
Step 6: check for VPNs, updates, and device faults
A VPN (virtual private network) sends your traffic through another server, which can add latency or reduce speed depending on distance and server load. Temporarily disconnect a VPN to compare performance, then reconnect it if you need its privacy or work-security benefits.
Update your operating system and Wi-Fi driver. A driver is software that lets an operating system communicate with hardware. If only one older device is slow, the adapter or driver may be the cause. Test it on another network if possible.
When to contact your ISP
Contact support when wired tests are consistently far below your plan after restarts and pauses, when the modem shows warning lights, or when multiple homes nearby have the same fault. Provide the time, wired test results, latency, and any outage reference number. That evidence helps support staff distinguish a home Wi-Fi issue from a line or neighborhood problem.

Sudden slowness is usually explainable: background traffic, weak Wi-Fi, a router problem, or an ISP issue. Compare wired and wireless tests, remove one variable at a time, and save a factory reset for last.
