IP addresses in plain English
An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a number used to route data across networks, much like a return address helps a delivery find its destination. Your public IP address is the address websites usually see for your internet connection. Your private IP address is the local address your router gives a phone, computer, or console at home, often beginning with 192.168 or 10.
Your ISP, or internet service provider, assigns or routes your public connection. NAT (network address translation) is the router feature that lets many home devices share one public IP. A public IP can often reveal the ISP and an approximate area; it is not normally a precise street address, but it can be useful for tracking patterns in logs.
Check what websites see
Use a reputable checker such as Cloudflare's trace page or IPinfo. Compare it while on home Wi-Fi and mobile data. Do not publish screenshots that include your IP, account name, or location data. Your device's network settings show the private address, which is generally not useful outside your local network.
Ways to change the address sites see
A VPN, or virtual private network, encrypts a connection between your device and a VPN provider's server, then sends web traffic onward from that server. Websites see the server's IP instead of your home IP. It can reduce exposure on public Wi-Fi and separate routine browsing from your home connection, but it shifts trust to the VPN provider. Read its privacy policy, ownership, security audits, and business model; “free” services may collect or monetize more data.

A VPN does not make you invisible, legal activity anonymous, or a malware-infected device safe. The VPN operator can also observe connection metadata and, depending on setup, traffic. HTTPS encrypts traffic between your browser and a website, but it does not make an unsafe site trustworthy.
Use a password manager, MFA, updates, and careful sharing alongside a VPN. For a high-risk situation, make a threat model: a plain-English description of what you are protecting, from whom, and what consequences matter.

Be skeptical of pages that make guaranteed promises, hide who operates them, or demand payment before explaining the issue.
Protect your accounts and devices

Turn on multi-factor authentication wherever available. Keep automatic updates enabled for your operating system, browser, apps, and router. Back up important files and periodically confirm you can restore one. Treat unexpected links, attachments, QR codes, login prompts, and payment requests as things to verify rather than obey. If a message claims to be from a company, open the official app or call the number on a statement you already have. Never solve an urgent digital problem by installing remote-control software for a stranger.
Know when to stop
Stop and contact official support, a trusted local professional, or the relevant authority when a step could expose private data, money, an account, or someone else's equipment. If you believe fraud or a crime is happening, preserve lawful evidence such as dates, screenshots, and receipts, then report it through the proper channel. Do not retaliate, “hack back,” or publish accusations without reliable proof.
The goal is informed, lawful control of your own technology. Small, documented steps are safer and more effective than shortcuts.
